How To Remove Gel, SNS & Bio Sculpture Nails At Home In 6 Easy Steps

19 November 2024

Words by The Parlour Room

So it’s been a few weeks between appointments and your edges are starting to lift up and you’re tempted to pick? Don’t!

Whatever you’re wearing; shellac, SNS, Bio Sculpture, if your nails are looking a little worse for wear and you can’t get an appointment with a professional, take a deep breath and follow our steps below to remove your nails at home.

We want to keep our nails strong and healthy and that means, removing them safely. Otherwise, there’s a good chance you’ll rip half the nail bed with you, causing even more damage long term. Taking up to 6 weeks to recover, and no one has time for that.

HOW TO REMOVE YOUR NAILS AT HOME

What you’ll need:

  • A nail file

  • Cotton wool buds

  • Foil

  • Cuticle oil

STEP 1: SOFTLY BUFF THE TOP LAYER OF NAIL POLISH

Take your nail file and softly buff the top layer of your nail polish. This helps break down the surface so the acetone can get in there and work its magic. Try and break down as much of the top layer as possible, making sure not to break the skin surrounding. Otherwise, the acetone may sting a little.

STEP 2: APPLY ACETONE & INDIVIDUALLY WRAP EACH NAIL

Using your cotton wool buds, lightly douse them in acetone and place over the top of your nail. Once you’ve done this, individually wrap them in foil as you go.

Pro tip – If you don’t have cotton wool buds, you can use tissues, toilet paper or even napkins.

STEP 3: SOAK FOR 10 MINUTES

Let the nails sit for at least 10 minutes so the acetone can break down the nail.

STEP 4: REMOVE FOIL & LIGHTLY BUFF REMAINING NAIL

Gently remove the foil and take your nail file to buff the remaining nail. If you find it’s still a little stubborn, you may need to soak them for another couple of minutes.

STEP 5: CUT & FILE YOUR NAILS

Once you’ve removed all the excess nail, wash your hands and take out your nail file. Tidy up your nails and file them back to the desired length and shape, carefully smoothing out any edges.

STEP 6: ADD CUTICLE OIL

A non-negotiable if you’re removing your nails at home. Cuticle oil will moisturise the cuticle, skin, and nail, helping to prevent any cracking and promote healthy growth.

Pro tip – if you don’t have our TPR Hydrate Cuticle Oil, a typical household oil can do the trick such as coconut oil or rosehip oil.

Our nails receive all their nutrients from our bloodstream below. So in order to maintain a healthy nail bed, it’s important we maintain a healthy lifestyle as well.
