Words by The Parlour Room

Becoming a first-time mum is undoubtedly a transformational experience, your body is going through exceptional changes, both expected and unexpected, as it performs a miracle, creating new life inside of you.

For the final instalment of our Mother’s Day interview series, we are are so excited to share with you the words from TPR Founder and first time mum, Natalie Ferrari. Welcoming little Maddalena into the world only a few short months ago, here Natalie shares with us her definition of beauty, how this, and her skin changed throughout pregnancy and advice for others, as well as her favourite beauty products fit for a mum on the go to get that glow.

Interview with Natalie Ferrari

What does beauty mean to you?

It’s not only about the outside but inside too. It’s how you feel in yourself, that’s what really shines through. It’s a way to show how you express yourself and how you look after yourself and treat yourself. There are so many different aspects of beauty, for me, it’s always been about self confidence, looking after yourself and something that brings women together.

How do you think this has changed since becoming a first time mum?

Mostly because I have zero time for myself, and you’re also really tired so don’t have the same energy you used to, where I used to enjoy taking my time with lots of different makeup steps, doing my hair, doing treatments, so many things, now it’s like how can I get ready in 15minutes while she’s napping? Because in her nap I also have to vaccum the house, put a load of washing on, wash her bottles, I also don’t know what I’m going to wear, so now I have to squeeze it all in, it’s about time efficient and trying not to look tired and still have that glow about you.

Did you find your skin changed during pregnancy? If so, how did you manage it?

It changed a lot during the first and second trimester, I had a lot of hormonal breakouts which there’s not a lot you can do. You just have to let them have their time which didn’t make me feel that great, I also found that I had more psoriasis under my arms but other than that skin was the same. The last trimester my skin got really good and (touch wood) has stayed that way since. I did swap to some pregnancy safe products like the Is Clinical Pro Heal Serum Advance + and I love the OCosmedics Recovery Cream which feels really good on my skin and the smell wasn’t too intense.

What piece of advice would you share for those going through pregnancy for the first time when it comes to their skin?

Don’t freak out! Your body is going through so many changes. You’re creating a human out of nothing so you have to expect some changes but it will calm down, you just have to manage it the best you can. Ask for advice from therapists if you need, but try not to go crazy using 100 different things on your skin as chances are the cause is hormonal and will only irritate your skin more. Try and keep to products that are soothing, that will feel good on your skin and it will get better on it’s own.

To date, what does your current skincare routine look like? Any favourite products or treatments?

Very basic few products. I cleanse with the  Is Clinical Cleansing Complex, then Pro Heal Serum, once or twice a week I’ll use the active serum if I remember (because i’m tired) and then I pop on recovery cream on top. In the morning I use Ultraceuticals SPF moisturiser and I mix in a pump of the Drunk Elephant anti-pollution drop with a little bronze, and has a little glow. Protected from the sun.

And your go-to beauty look?

I like to pop on a light foundation to even out coverage, I love the Dior face and body. Then I use the charlotte Tilbury bronzing and highlighting palette in one. I bronze around face, and put highlighter on the inner corner of eyes which makes a real different to look more awake. I use Benefit on brows, I don’t use lipstick anymore though, how can i kiss my bub if i have lipstick on? I don’t want to cover her with lipstick so I stick to a balm or go bare if I’m taking her with me.

Lastly, when it comes to all things skin and beauty, have you recently discovered any mum life hacks that you can share with us?

I really like dior nail glow, it’s clear with hint of colour and drys super quick. It makes your hands look a bit neater. Not everyone has times for manicures and when you’re washing your hands as much as we are, they can chip quite easily so at least you feel a bit put together. Getting my nails done is now a bit of a treat for me.

Another one is mixing bronzer into your SPF – so don’t have time for makeup, can feel a bit of a glow that way

And also using a blow dry that’s a brush – they’re super quick and easy to use after a shower, so at least if nothing else, your hair is nicely dried.
