Your Summer Skin Detox Starts Now | 5 Habits To Master For Glowing Skin

Mmhmm, don’t you just love summer? The sun, the salt, the long days and warm balmy evenings, not to mention that sun-kissed glow... Living in Clovelly, when we’re not at work rest assured our days are spent outdoors, dipping in and out of the ocean, letting the saltwater do its thing.

While most summer detoxes are focused on diet and exercise, it’s time to shift our focus and turn our attention to the health of our skin.

Whether you want to target a specific concern, opt for an all-over approach, or just looking to clean up old habits, the following advice has been approved by our highly trained therapists to help you detox your skin this summer and achieve a long-lasting glow.

Give your skin a break and master the real, no makeup, makeup look

After months spent indoors and wearing masks, it’s time to let our skin breathe. Pair it all back to basics and master the art of the real, no make up, makeup look. Lucky for you, this summer’s top beauty trends can be described as ‘natural with a twist’, so you can still get away with wearing some makeup, although try and keep it as minimal as possible, and don’t forget the sunscreen!

Our top tip to master the real no makeup, makeup look? It’s having a good foundation to start with! This means your skin. And the first step? Booking in for a skin consultation at Self. Let a professional help identify and discuss your skincare needs and make some recommendations to help you achieve your goals.

Be proactive with your cleaning

With the increased heat in summer a lot of surfaces can become a petri dish for bacteria. We’d hate to sound like your mother, but let’s be honest, when was the last time you changed your sheets?

There’s no point cleansing your skin and investing in a good skincare routine when all you’re going to do is sleep on a dirty pillowcase. So it’s important you wash your sheets, switch over your towels and alternate your pillowcase, not forgetting to deep clean your makeup brushes, and of course, remembering to wash your hands on a regular basis.

If not, it’s likely you’ll transfer a lot of dirt and bacteria across which can cause some nasty breakouts.

Drain the toxins from your body

AKA gua sha your face! Easily one of our favourite skincare trends to roll on into 2021, using a gua sha is one of the most effective ways to define and sculpt the face. With a few simple movements, say bye-bye to tired, puffy eyes in a matter of minutes.

Another technique you can try is dry body brushing and it’s also one of the many benefits of an infrared sauna. By increasing circulation to the area, you’ll stimulate the lymphatic drainage system which will result in smoother, firmer and softer look skin.

If you’re in the Randwick area and want to kick start your summer skin detox, book in for the Summer Detox experience at Self, it includes an infrared sauna session, summer sculpt body treatment and 60-minute massage. Trust us, you’ll feel amazing.

Take a holistic approach

Skincare is much more than the products we use. It’s what we eat, drink, nourish and fuel our bodies with. Taking a holistic approach means looking at it from all angles. Understanding that in summer, where we tend to be more social and increase our alcohol intake with it, our gut is going to determine the health of our skin more than anything else.

It's important to make sure we’re replenishing our body with lots of water, probiotics, fresh produce, herbals teas and plenty of fruit and vegetables, in order to maintain good gut health. If it all seems a bit hard, or you’re not sure where to start, we sat down with Siena Best, a local health practitioner here in Sydney, who shared some really useful advice, so make sure you have a read.

Get moving

The more you move your body the more you’ll improve in all areas of life. Fact.

It doesn’t have to be high impact either, incidental exercise like walking or tennis, even shopping, is just as good. As long as you’re getting your heart rate up for at least half an hour each day, you’ll reap the benefits of all those endorphins and ooze a whole lot of confidence with. Ultimately leaving you with that radiating long-lasting summer glow.
