Words by The Parlour RoomAhead of Mother’s Day, we caught up with Brillo Beauty Co- Founder, Leigh Campbell to chat all things Motherhood and the launch of her new pregnancy focused brand, Brillo Beauty. Brillo Beauty is a skincare brand catering to pregnant and postpartum people. It was born out of the need to create quality body products for mothers-to-be, new mums and anyone really! Discover Leigh’s top tips for maintaining healthy skin during pregnancy, her insights on navigating the journey of motherhood, and how Brillo Products are your new best friend when it comes to pregnancy.
What does motherhood mean to you and how did you bring this into the Brillo brand?
Motherhood means so much to me, it has changed every aspect of my life.
I found I was a little lost in pregnancy and very lost in the fourth trimester. I wasn’t sure who I was anymore, right down to how to dress and what my new role meant for me.
When we created Brillo Beauty I reflected on those days and really wanted to create a brand that would have appealed to me back then – chic and fun, not too boring or serious, stylish and premium. I finally found my groove in motherhood and that essence and style is reflected in Brillo Beauty.
How do you balance your beauty career, Brillo & being a mum?
I don’t. I really feel balance is a lie sold to mothers to make us feel even more guilty than we already do. Social media makes us buy into the idea that everyone is excelling at every aspect but it’s rarely true and I constantly remind myself of that, it’s not good for my health. I love working and you can be mum-shamed for admitting that, but it truly makes me happy. I also love and adore my son. Do I do both perfectly every day? Absolutely not. But that makes me human and I’m okay with that.
What piece of advice would you share for those going through pregnancy for the first time when it comes to their skin?
Take out the actives and focus on nourishment and hydration. Skin is often more sensitive, so going back to basics makes sense. Plenty of time for cutting edge anti-ageing stuff post birth or when you finish feeding. For now, just hydrate….oh, and don’t forget your SPF everyday – pregnancy melasma is real.
For the body, of course you need premium body care products to nurture changing skin. May I introduce you toBrillo Beauty? 😉
You’ve been so open about your IVF journey and how it is an emotionally and physically taxing process. What advice can you give to women going through the process?
Oh boy, it’s so tough. I’d say ‘just keep swimming’, but in fact I couldn’t keep swimming anymore, which is when I wrote my fertility series,Treading Water. My advice would be to communicate openly with your partner if you have one, lean on family and friends and be gentle with yourself, mostly mentally.
Lastly, when it comes to all things Skin & Beauty, have you recently discovered any mum life hacks that you can share with us?
Yes!
I oursource where I can – when my brows are professionally done I can get away with much less makeup and I still look pulled together. Nails, too – when my hands look polished I feel like I somewhat have my life together. Plus the time alone is not self-indulgent – we were women before we were mothers and it’s important to remember that.
TheBrillo Beauty’s The Balm is ideal for a busy mum. The flip-top lid means she can apply it with one hand while juggling the kids, and it’s not just for dry nipples and lips, it’s an amazing highlighter on the cheekbones and great for dry cuttule, too. It’s a winter must-have for everyone.
You can also find The Brillo Beauty Body Butter in our Mum-To-Be Pregnancy Gift Box. It is a rich body butter which helps to deeply hydrate and restore changing skin. A powerful combination of shea butter, betaine, sea buckthorn oil, vitamin E and evening primrose oil will leave skin nourished, soft and smooth.
