Words by The Parlour RoomCleaning your makeup brushes is an important step not to be missed in your regular beauty routine. Just as you would maintain your products, the tools you use need to be shown some love as well.
As a general rule of thumb, if you’re wearing makeup regularly, you should be spot cleaning them after each use, deep cleaning them every month.
Make sure you watch our video below where Natalie shows you how to clean your makeup brushes step-by-step.
Cleaning your makeup brushes helps maintain healthy, glowing skin by preventing any build-up of product and bacteria, which if left for too long, can lead to blemishes and breakouts on your skin. Regularly cleaning your brushes also helps them last longer.
Depending on how often you wear makeup and how often you use your brushes, you should be spot cleaning at least once a week, and deep cleansing each month.
You can use almost any cleaning agent to clean your makeup brushes. From baby shampoo, regular unscented house soap, dishwashing liquid, and olive oil. There are a lot of household pantry items you can use to clean your makeup brushes.
What you will need:
Shampoo
Small jar
Small towel
If some of your brushes have any waterproof liner or oily based products remaining, mix in a little bit of olive oil in with your shampoo.
Don’t submerge the entire brush, only the bristle. If you do, you run the risk of the water getting into the farrel of the brush where the hairs are glued together, and over time they can come unstuck and fall out.
Take one brush at a time and gently wash the brush against the brush cleansing palette in a circular motion.
If you have a thin comb, you can brush them or use your fingers to squeeze out the excess water.
Fold the towel up on one side so the brushes can lay on an angle and the water can drain.
Beauty blenders are used to blend, so unsurprisingly they will pick up a lot of product along the way. Keeping them clean and regularly cleaning them, will ensure smooth lines and an even blend for all future use.
What you will need:
Soap
water
Gently apply soap to the beauty blender and lightly rub all over.
Under running water, gently continue to wash the beauty blender, squeezing the excess water as you go.
You may need to repeat a few times to remove all the left over product.
