Words by The Parlour Room

One of the best parts about planning a wedding is gathering all the inspiration. From Instagram saved folders, Pinterest boards and magazine cut-outs, it’s all part of the fun. Yet when it comes to hair and makeup, Bridal beauty expert Georgia Hull, one of Sydne’s most in-demand makeup artists for Brides-to-be, tells us that we’re not to get carried away, ‘Your wedding day isn’t the day to try new things’, instead ‘stick to what you know, so you feel 100% comfortable and confident.’

We recently sat down with Georgia to pick her brain on all things Bridal beauty and share with us some of her top tips as well as the common mistakes to avoid, to ensure you’re looking and feeling your best on your wedding day.

First of all, what’s the biggest bridal beauty trend you’re seeing at the moment?

I’m finding most of my Brides want to achieve effortless beauty, textured hair and natural makeup, glowing skin but still polished and chic.

Do you have a favourite make up look for brides?

I don’t necessarily have a favourite look for Brides, I prefer to work with my Bride to enhance her own natural beauty and make her feel her best. If that means a sexy smoky eye I’m down for it! If that means a natural wash over the eyes and rosy cheeks/lips, I’m down for that! It’s not about me, it’s all about the Bride and how she feels.

When working with brides-to-be, what does the usual process involve?

I like to keep it pretty casual with my Brides, make them feel comfortable and treat them as a friend. After an enquiry comes through, I’ll make sure I’m available and then organise a trial time. I ask my Brides to bring reference images of hair & makeup that they like or desire for the day. I also like to see pictures of the Brides themselves when they have felt sexy, beautiful or their best. Another question I like to ask is “What do you hate or dislike when it comes to makeup or hair “. Most of the time people tell you what they love, but not what they dislike. I then eliminate what they don’t like first and design a look with what they do like!

On the day, how long should you allow for hair & make up?

I allow 1 hour per service for either hair or makeup. The rule is 45 mins for application & 15 mins for cleaning in between clients. I recommend finishing all hair & makeup an hour before the time you need to leave for the ceremony. Say you need to leave by 3 pm, make sure you are finished with H&M by 2 pm and starting to get in your dress. You’ll need a good hour to get ready comfortably, take photo’s and have a glass of champagne!

When it comes to all things Bridal Beauty, what is your number one piece of advice?

Your wedding day isn’t the day to try new things. Stick to what you know so you feel 100% comfortable and confident. If you feel your best with your hair down and tousled, wear it down. Don’t go for an updo or anything out of the ordinary! The most important thing is that you can look back at your photos and know you looked your best!

What is one of the most common mistakes you see a lot of people make when it comes to their bridal beauty?

Do not do anything out of the ordinary before the big day, I can’t stress this enough. If you are getting a spray tan or trying a new treatment make sure to trial them well before the wedding day. Facial waxing can sometimes cause irritation and the wax leave a film over the skin. With any treatments you are having, make sure you have enough downtime before the wedding day.

On the day, what advice do you give to brides to keep their make up in check?

My advice is to always take what you would on a normal night out, concealer, maybe some powder if you have more of an oily skin type or prone to getting shiny. A must is a touch-up lipstick, not just for the Bride but for the Bridal party. Unfortunately, your makeup artist can’t control how much you kiss, eat and drink after the ceremony. Choose your own lip colour that you can apply when necessary throughout the night!

Any other helpful pieces of advice for brides, to ensure a seamless experience on the day?

No wedding ever runs on time! In all my 15 years I’ve never worked a wedding that has run completely on time, extra wriggle room is KEY!
