A spray tan is the ultimate sun-safe solution for achieving a radiant glow year-round.

It’s also the easiest way to convince people you’ve just returned from six blissful weeks on the Amalfi Coast (…at least, that’s what we tell ourselves!). No matter how carefully you prepare for your tan, the outfit you choose for your appointment, your pre-tan routine, and how you care for it afterwards can make all the difference in achieving flawless results.

For our seasoned regulars, you likely have your go-to routine down. But if you’re newer to spray tans or simply need a refresher, we’ve put together a TPR-approved guide.

HOW TO PREP FOR A SPRAY TAN

The secret to a gorgeous tan starts before you even step into your appointment! Follow these easy tips to get your skin prepped and ready to glow.

24 Hours Before Your Tan:
  • Take an everything shower – this includes washing your hair, shaving, and exfoliating thoroughly.
  • If you have old tan residue, remove it completely using an exfoliating mitt or a tan remover. Avoid using tan remover within 24 hours of your appointment, as it may alter your skin’s pH balance and so the new tan may not stick to it.
  • Even if you don’t have old tan to remove, exfoliation is still essential. You can pick up an exfoliating glove from The Parlour Room to ensure a smooth, even canvas.
  • After exfoliating, moisturise well. Hydrated skin helps your tan apply seamlessly and last longer.
  • In the week leading up to your appointment, make a habit of moisturising daily to keep your skin hydrated. Please let us know if you have any particularly dry areas of skin that the tan doesn’t tend to stick to and we can amend our technique slightly.
  • Avoid any moisturiser, deodorant, or perfume on the day of your appointment – these can create a barrier and lead to uneven results.

What to Wear to Your Spray Tan Appointment

Loose, Dark Clothing

For obvious reasons, opt for loose, dark clothing. Tight-fitting garments can rub against your skin, leading to streaks or patches, while lighter colours may absorb excess bronzer. Matching lounge sets are a chic and comfortable option – just ensure the waistband isn’t too snug.

Footwear: Keep It Easy

Slip into thongs or slides to avoid unwanted friction on your feet. If it’s raining, you can also wear loose bed socks to protect your tan while keeping cosy.

Button-Ups for Effortless Dressing

A button-up shirt is your best friend when it comes to post-tan dressing. Avoid pulling anything over your head to prevent disturbing your tan – better yet, opt for an oversized button-up that doubles as a breezy, effortless dress.

T-Shirts & Long Sleeves Over Singlets

Where possible, avoid singlets – skin-on-skin contact (especially under the arms) can cause uneven patches. Instead, choose a lightweight tee or long-sleeve shirt made from breathable natural fabrics like cotton or linen.

No Tight Straps or Underwires

Skip anything too restrictive, including tight waistbands, bra straps, and underwires. The last thing you want is imprints or patchiness when wearing a strappy dress or backless outfit.

Wet Weather Considerations

If the forecast calls for rain, don’t forget an umbrella.

Post-Tan Care: Keeping Your Glow Intact

At The Parlour Room, we’ve got spray tans for every schedule! No matter which one you choose, here’s how to keep your glow looking flawless.

30-Minute to 4-Hour Express Tan
  • After your first rinse, use lukewarm water only – no hot showers.
Gently use your hands to remove the guide colour, but avoid loofahs or exfoliating mitts.
  • Don’t panic if it looks like your tan has completely gone, this is normal!
  • Once the water runs clear, pat your skin dry with a towel and avoid applying moisturiser or deodorant until your second shower (8 hours later), as your tan will still be developing.
  • During your second shower, you can use a mild body wash, followed by moisturiser to lock in hydration.
6-8 Hour Tan
  • If you opt for a longer-developing tan, you’ll sleep in your tan overnight.
  • The next morning, your first shower should include soap to cleanse away the guide colour.
  • After your shower, pat dry and apply a rich moisturiser.
  • If something’s not quite right with your tan, let us know within 48 hours! We’ll fix it up and add notes to your file for next time.

Prolonging Your Tan

To maintain a radiant, even tan for as long as possible:

  • Moisturise daily, especially after showers.
  • Shower once a day to prevent excessive fading.
  • Use Sunescape Hydrating Body Butter for long-lasting hydration.
  • After 7 days, introduce a gradual tan extender to keep your glow fresh. You can use Sunescape Gradual Tanning lotion.

We hope this guide helps you achieve your most flawless tan yet! If you have any questions, feel free to email us at info@theparlourroom.com.au or connect with us on Instagram @theparlourroom__ we’d love to hear from you!
