Words by The Parlour RoomThere’s no denying the positive effects of a spray tan. A convenient way to achieve a gorgeous golden glow all year round, a spray tan not only makes you look amazing but feel amazing too. Whether you’re a regular in the salon or prefer to stay at home, it’s all about achieving a flawless finish.
We spoke to Parlour Room regulars Renae Ayris, Erin Holland and Montarna Pitt to share their top tips and how exactly, a beautiful fresh tan makes them feel.
Having a fresh tan gives me so much more confidence. I also feel like I don’t need to wear as much makeup when I have a tan 🥰
I don’t think my ‘at home’ tans ever turn out as good as my professional tans from The Parlour Room BUT if for some reason I have to do one, I make sure I use a makeup brush to blend over my feet, hands, wrists and face- so there are no harsh lines and it’s all blended nicely.
Make sure you drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated and moisturise morning and night. I also exfoliate the night before my tan.
I am a huge sun safety advocate – so I will never have a real tan. Thank goodness there are so many amazing faux tan products out there days! I absolutely love having a fresh tan. I am super duper pale, currently with brown hair (I’m a natural blonde) so I feel so much more alive and healthy-looking with a bit of a bronze!!
Start from a clean base. Remove any excess leftover tan, shave your legs, and moisturise you’re tan from day 2! My absolute favourite DIY product is the Bondi Sands Light/Medium foam. I also use a foundation brush (just for this purpose!) to blend in the problematic areas of the knees, elbows, hands and feet – it gives you the most flawless finish!
Not all tans are done equally! Find a salon that has a product and application that works for you. I can’t go past The Parlour Room and their ‘Weekend in Bondi’ tan by Sunescape. It’s the most natural I’ve ever had and looks great on camera – which in my line of work is incredibly important I don’t come across orange! Also, make sure you’re prepared – do your exfoliating prep and shaving at home so you get the most out of your tan.
A great tan makes me feel so alive and fresh! I’m not one for sitting in the sun and picking up a natural tan, plus I’m quite fair so I have to be careful in the direct heat. A spray tan instantly lifts my mood, gives me a safe sun-kissed glow that I’d never get from sunbathing, and it just seems to make me feel great in my clothes!
At home, it’s all about the pre-tan prep. You need to do a full-body exfoliation and apply a thick moisturiser in the lead up to tanning; I usually do a couple of these sessions beforehand. Fake tan is really dehydrating on the skin and you don’t want that flaking lizard look.
Just like a home tan, it’s all about the preparations and if you’re paying money to have a salon tan you want it to go the distance. Rinse off the tan with water – no soap – and let it develop naturally. Then after every shower, lather on a thick body lotion to help your skin stay hydrated and keep the tan healthy and fresh. You also need to work with your salon therapist to pick the right shade for your skin tone – beware the really orange shades, these don’t look natural and won’t last very long.
