Words by The Parlour RoomThere’s no better time than Spring to go through and clean out your old makeup. While many of us tend to hold on to products for a lot longer than what we should, The Parlour Room founder, Natalie Papadopoulos shares her top tips to clean our your makeup this Spring.
First things first, you should clean your makeup brushes. Regularly cleaning your brushes not only helps them last longer but prevents any build-up of product and bacteria, which if left for too long, can lead to blemishes and breakouts on your skin. If you’re unsure how, we put together a short little guide to help clean your makeup brushes here.
The next step is to go through and Mary Kondo your makeup. Take it all out and separate them into piles; your foundations, blushes, powders, eyeliners, etc. Go through each and take out each and every one and ask yourself when was the last time you used it? Has it expired? Most products will last you around 12 months, however, if you’re wearing makeup daily, things like mascara should be thrown out every 3 months.
Nat’s tip – if you haven’t used it in 12 months, you should throw it out.
After you’ve gone through all of your makeup, the next thing to do is maintenance; checking the quality and condition of all your products. For example, sharpen your pencils, clean your foundation bottles and wash any makeup bags or cream blush sticks, removing any dust and build-up of dirt.
If your makeup is scattered all over the bathroom, chances are they’ll be ruined before the next time you use them. Having a good set up with proper storage will make the world of difference (perhaps even shave a few minutes off) when you go to do your makeup next. The Etoile Collective clear acrylic organisers are perfect for this. With a number of beauty boxes available in different sizes, they’re super accessible and make organising your makeup easy. Just make sure to keep it in a cool dry place (we suggest the bedroom), and make sure it’s not in direct sunlight.
The fun part! Make a list of all the products you’ve been dying to try or need to replace. If you’re like us and have been struggling to match your foundation with the changing season (yes, we know…the struggle is real), you can follow Nat’s 5 steps to match the perfect foundation.
