Words by The Parlour RoomOur cuticle is the thin layer of skin that wraps around the edge of the nail. Its job is to protect from infection and prevent bacteria from getting in under our skin when new nails come through, so it’s important they’re well-maintained.
Keeping our nails healthy, however, involves more than just a good diet. Continuously exposed to the elements, cuticle oil is the go-to product when your nails start to look chapped, cracked or dry.
Cuticle oil is an oil used to moisturise and hydrate the nail bed. Each product varies with ingredients however it’s usually a combination of natural vegetable oils; anything from avocado, coconut and almond oil, as well as Vitamin E. The Vitamin E, helps to soften the skin and help repair any damage such as scars.
Aside from helping to maintain healthy, hydrated nails, there are a few added benefits of cuticle oil. These include:
Applying cuticle oil helps massage in some much-needed vitamins to help keep them soft and subtle.
Cuticle oil promotes blood flow, in turn promoting thick, strong nails over thin and weak ones.
After a manicure, applying cuticle oil will protect your nails from any immediate, incidental disturbances. Anything that interacts with the oil will slide off instead of sticking to the nail and disrupting the polish.
Like most oils, you only need a small drop. Simply apply and gently massage in a circular motion over the cuticle.
At The Parlour Room we apply cuticle oil after every manicure and pedicure however we recommend clients apply daily, in the evening before you go to bed. Where the nails can soak up all the vitamins and minerals, as the oil works its magic overnight.
As with most beauty products, you should always look for those with minimal ingredients. When it comes to cuticle oil, our only recommendation is you find one that contains Vitamin E. Vitamin E plays a key role in repairing cracked and dehydrated skin.
We recommend the TPR HYDRATE Cuticle Oil. It contains Vitamin E and is designed to nourish and replenish, beautiful, healthy, hydrated nails.
However, in saying that you can always look to your pantry cupboard for an easy at-home solution. Coconut oil, rosehip oil, and olive oil are three great alternatives and do an excellent job of keeping your cuticles in check.
